Winner
Little Wolf Chef
Wildly impressive game that targets the Nintendo 64. The title cards, intro screens and transitiosn are perfectly in line with games of the time. The game design borders on being perfect, from the incredible aesthetics to the 3D platforming level design with collectathon progression. The amount of attention to detail invested into every facet of the game is beyond impressive. Even the finishing screen that displays when the level has been copleted is meticulously crafted. One major complaint would be the use of mouse cursor given that Nintendo 64 games are generally controlled via button presses, but beyond that the game would almost pass perfectly as a Nintendo 64 game. The extra high-fidelity cover art is also nice touch. Overall, this is an incredible, amazing submission and a job well done
A big thanks to everybody who participated.
See you next time!

- Onion By DanielSour Unrated The game "Onion" is back from last year, this time with a new engine. Just like last year the game doesn't quite match the aesthetics of a pre-2000s platform, but it's entirely refactored from scratch which is a nice touch. Unfortunately since the game is a pure remake that is identical to the original game that was submitted last year, it has to be disqualified on account of not having been created explicitly for the jam. Either way, it's a nice attempt and it's good to see that the game is still being worked on Check out Onion

The level unfortunately seemed to be a bit bugged to the point where it was hard to ascertain what the purpose of the game was. However, the colors were nice and rich, and the concept interesting. A decent jam submission. design 1 aesthetics 2 believability 1 extras 0 Total 4 Check out Bosco the Wisp {incomplete jam entry}
- Lost To The Abyss By inky90 Game Boy Color Gameplay is a tad repetitive and the audio is a bit monotonous. The fact that it's a real Game Boy ROM is nice. Overall the game is a decent beginner's attempt. design 1 aesthetics 1 believability 2 extras 0 Total 4 Check out Lost To The Abyss

- Ultra Giga Ball Brawler By timid_sloth Nintendo 64 Interesting concept with a satisfying gameplay loop. The graphics are a little bit too high-fidelity for the intended platform, but the perspective and character design is spot on. The 8-bit audio design is a bit jarring given that the platform is supposed to be 64-bit. Nice CRT effect and cover art. design 2 aesthetics 2 believability 1 extras 1 Total 6 Check out Ultra Giga Ball Brawler
- Beadu Bryten By credgehog Game Boy Advance Impressively comprehensive, and a real GBA game to boot. Music is well-done, but visuals could use a bit more work. Gameplay based around all-human VS gameplay is a bit unusual for a handheld console that primarily revolves around single-player gaming. Either way it's a very nice attempt, and a decent game in many ways. design 2 aesthetics 1 believability 2 extras 1 Total 6 Check out Beadu Bryten
- Toy Terror By Uxsol Unspecified platform Very accurate concept, visuals and aesthetics as far as the intended direction goes. The gameplay is a bit buggy, but the level design and environments are varied enough to keep the game interesting. design 2 aesthetics 2 believability 2 extras 0 Total 6 Check out Toy Terror

The game is comprehensive with music, several levels and a title screen. design 2 aesthetics 1 believability 3 extras 0 Total 6 Check out Sylvanium
- Dino Defenders By Code Drifters NES Very impressive game as far as gameplay and aesthetics go. The game is an in-depth tower defense game with near-professional-grade mechanics. As far as believabiltiy goes, the game is supposed to target the NES platform but doesn't quite hit the mark on account of the high-fidelity quality of graphics and animations as well as the Game Boy-like color palette. Still, the game is impressive on its own merits, and is more than well-made. design 2 aesthetics 3 believability 1 extras 0 Total 6 Check out Dino Defenders
- Tetra Factory By FluxxSC Game Boy An interesting take on Tetris that requires the player to create specific shapes rather than clearing blocks in the normal manner. The game targets the Game Boy platform and does so fairly well. The one thing that stands out as perhaps out of place is the music, which is uses realistic instruments rather than instruments derived from the Game Boy chip. The game is a fairly decent submission with a lot of work put into it. design 2 aesthetics 2 believability 2 extras 0 Total 6 Check out Tetra Factory
- Sigma-V By Charbomber Game Boy Advanced A fun, simple tower defense game stylized like a NES game ported to the Game Boy Advance. The graphics are good as far as accuracy goes, but the music is perhaps a bit out of place. The title screen is nice and the gameplay loop is well-made, even though a couple of bugs could be found in the gameplay. All-in-all it's a decent jam submission. design 2 aesthetics 2 believability 2 extras 0 Total 6 Check out Sigma-V
- GlosterMeteor By blu soft Unspecified platform Inspired by the game 1944, this game is a top-down arcade shooter with multiple levels. Despite not targeting any specific platform, a lot of love and care has been invested into everything from the gameplay loop to the sprites and backgrounds. The pre-rendered 3D sprites are reminiscent of a Klik & Play-esque homebrew-game, and overall gameplay and aesthetics are akin to a well-made Windows 95 game. Had the game aimed to emulate the style of a pre-2000s platform then it could've been an impressive submission, but even so it's a very well-made game. design 3 aesthetics 3 believability 0 extras 0 Total 6 Check out GlosterMeteor
- Crabby Crab By Reinhold_Kirkham Unspecified platform The game doens't have any explicit platform that it tries to emulate, but it comes fairly close to the NES in that regard. The music, aesthetics and gameplay are reminiscent of an '80s NES arcade game, and are all well put-together. Perhaps the one thing that could've been improved on is the length of the game, as the game ends a bit abruptly after a round has been finished. Either way, it's a very well-made submission. design 2 aesthetics 2 believability 2 extras 0 Total 6 Check out Crabby Crab
- Dogfight By lcmacdon Emerson Arcadia 2001 A simple arcade game intended to emulate the style of the Emerson Arcadia 2001. The gameplay, aesthetics and audio are all accurate and in line with the intended platform. It's a decent submission with a good level of accuracy. design 2 aesthetics 2 believability 2 extras 0 Total 6 Check out Dogfight
- Quack's Cave By zpdosmaen Game Boy A simple platformer made for the Game Boy. The visuals and gameplay are on par with a late-80s Game Boy game in that sprites are small and simple, and that it focuses more on arcade style gameplay than other genres. The game has no music, but the level design is nice and the addition of multiple levels is well-done. design 2 aesthetics 2 believability 2 extras 0 Total 6 Check out Quack's Cave
- Invaders By Virtual-Visionary Halcyon Impressive game and an interesting choice of platform with the Halcyon LaserDisc console. The game is surprisingly accurate as far as capturing the LaserDisc game aesthetic goes, but is perhaps a little bit too on the nose with the simulated scanlines. The gameplay and aesthetics are a perfect blend of flat and static 2D sprites combined with an immersive and rich video-based backdrop. The title cards and transitions are equally impressvie as the game, as is the background music. The game features several levels of gameplay, and on top fo that has some impressive extra flavor text produced. A job well done, and a strong contender for the jam. design 2 aesthetics 2 believability 2 extras 1 Total 7 Check out Invaders
- Warehouse Fright By Eduardo Kumagai NES A well-made NES-like tile done with a fairly high level of accuracy. The resolution and color palette are spot on, but the graphics are a bit unusual and the lack of pixlel roundnig for sprite movements are a bit too high-fidelity. The transitions and title card are impressive, but perhaps most impressively is the gameplay, which is both fun and on par with late-80s early-90s NES games. The black backgrounds and looping tile backdrops are also on brand for NES games of that time. The audio is fairly spot on as well, but the sound effects are maybe a bit too loud and jarring. Either way, it's a very well-made game. design 3 aesthetics 2 believability 2 extras 0 Total 7 Check out Warehouse Fright
- Open Skies By Religious Skies PSX An impressive submission that invokes the aestehtics of the PSX. The resolution is a bit inconsistent and in places too high-fidelity for the intended platform, but the aesthetics, the dithering and geometric shapes are all in line with what you'd expect from a PSX game. There are some bugs in the game and it feels unfinished in some ways, but the effort invested in the level design weighs up any downsides. All-in-all a decent submission. design 2 aesthetics 3 believability 2 extras 0 Total 7 Check out Open Skies
- Bullet Train! By PizzaSlice_03 Unspecified platform Incredibly impressive game, especially in regards to both the visuals as well as the sheer comprehensiveness of the game. The game has several different cutscenes and multiple levels with their own gameplay modes and mechanics, starting with a Battletoads-esque racing level, following up with an extensive platforming level and then adding in a turn-based battle system. As far as retro adherence goes the game doesn't specify any particular platform, and it also doesn't line up with the style of any particular pre-2000s platform. That said, it's an impressive game in its own right and a great submission. design 3 aesthetics 3 believability 1 extras 0 Total 7 Check out Bullet Train!
- Still Fishing By Bayin Unspecified platform A cute game that seemingly attempts to capture the aesthetics of Game Boy games. The gameplay is a bit repetitive, but the art is great and the music is on-brand for a Game Boy game. The game is a well-made submission. design 2 aesthetics 3 believability 2 extras 0 Total 7 Check out Still Fishing
- Apollo's Prison 3D By Softinstine Unspecified platform Incredibly impressive. The intended platform is not specified, but the game looks like something out of a Windows 95 clone or perhaps even a fourth generation console-computer hybrid like Philips' CD-I. The game's aesthetics and gameplay are reminiscent of Operation Body Count, which used the Wolfenstein 3D engine but utilized more realistic graphics. The gameplay was a tad unpolished and the game probably should've been framed as perhaps a beta or a demo, but the mock-operating system that the game comes wrapped in makes up for it. but all-in-all it's a more than sufficient submission. design 1 aesthetics 3 believability 2 extras 2 Total 8 Check out Apollo's Prison 3D
- Lunar Sea By MFauzan Unspecified platform Very impressive game as far as aesthetic, gameplay and accuracy goes. The game seemingly attempts to target the NES and does so well, with perhaps the exception of pixel rendering and movement being a bit too high-fidelity. Most impressive are the visual and presetnational aspects of the game, including the title card, cutscenes, tilesets, level variations and menus. The game even invokes the classic NES effect of looping 8x8px tiles for its background elements. The music is a bit too repetitive and would perhaps have been better off as a less jarring ambient loop, but all-in-allt the game is very impressive and checks many of the most important boxes. design 2 aesthetics 3 believability 3 extras 0 Total 8 Check out Lunar Sea
- GameClock Baseball By fractalcherries LCD handheld Incredibly impressive game that emulates the style of a Game & Watch game, but is played on a photo of a customized handheld device. The on-screen display graphics look fully accurate, and the gameplay is entierly in line with Game & Watch games made at the time. Even the case desgin and backdrops are well-made. The one point of frustration is perhaps the controls, but beyond that the game is a strong jam submission despite its simplicity. design 2 aesthetics 3 believability 2 extras 2 Total 9 Check out GameClock Baseball
- Mars Rescue By kronoman MS-DOS An incredibly impressive MS-DOS game made from scratch using QBASIC. As far as aesthetics, gameplay and music goes, it's about as accurate as it can get. The gameplay is a bit on the simpler side, but that's par for the course for the time. The game is almost indistinguishable from one of the simpler arcade games that might've been passed around on a floppy disk back in the early '90s. Perhaps one thing that might've been nice is a graphical title screen in order to indicate a more professional-grade game, but in either case the game impresses in just about every aspect - in no small part because it was made in QBASIC. design 2 aesthetics 2 believability 3 extras 2 Total 9 Check out Mars Rescue
- Goblinoid By DarcTyde Games MS-DOS Extremely well-made game. Accurately portrays later-generation MS-DOS games with its - for its time - higher resolution. The gameplay loop, transitions and title cards are as professional-grade as could be expected from a mid-range homebrew MS-DOS game developer at the tmie. Impressively enough the game also utilizes OPL music, and the music is professional-grade and on-brand for an MS-DOS game of this style. The depth of gameplay and the number of levels are equally impressive. The one minor detail worth mentioning is that an MS-DOS game isn't likely to use OPL for both music and sound effects, which this game seems to do. An MS-DOS game would often use OPL for either music or sound effects, but rarely both due to the technical complexity that it would entail. In either case, the game is both impressive and accurate. It's one of the strongest contenders for this year's jam. design 3 aesthetics 3 believability 3 extras 0 Total 9 Check out Goblinoid
- Little Wolf Chef By BlockyLeon Nintendo 64 Wildly impressive game that targets the Nintendo 64. The title cards, intro screens and transitiosn are perfectly in line with games of the time.
